The Sleep Song

The Sleep Song

A song about why we need to sleep and what happens when we dream, based on a theory about dreams that I heard.

I find it remarkable that every animal needs to sleep and will go crazy if not allowed to sleep, even a mouse. And all of us critters need a great deal of sleep every night. I find the need for sleep to be endlessly interesting.

Grizzly bear is looking for food, all day long,
His brain is full with bugs and honey, wanders along,
Come sleep time it quiets down
The memory left was the berries he found,
And where it was he found them.

The great whale she swims around, all day long,
Experience of underwater, sad whale songs,
Come sleep time it sorted down
One thing left was a wreck she found,
And a funny looking creature making bubbles.

Gotta let your brain catch up,
After every day,
Filter what’s worth keeping,
And what can be tossed away.

Pete the Parrot hears the radio, all day long,
His brain is full with talk and chatter, lots of songs,
Come sleep time quiets down
One song left was Tears of a Clown
When there's no one around

Little Kevin plays with friends, all day long,
His brain is full with tales and talk, right and wrong,
Come sleep time gets sorted down
Only memory left was falling on the ground,
And how he skinned his knee.

Gotta let your brain catch up,
So shut it down every day,
Filter what’s worth keeping,
And what can be tossed away.

When we sift our memories, all night long,
Opening boxes to put them in, where they belong,
What’s already in the boxes,
Escapes and starts to play,
Setting loose our nightmares and dreams

Gotta let your brain catch up,
So shut it down every day,
Filter what’s worth keeping,
And what should be tossed away.
