One of the many errors we can make is to create a non-existant fantasy of someone we meet — and fall in love with that fantasy. I have done this a number of times and can testify that it doesn't work, besides being terribly unfair to the actual person that you "paint" your fantasy over.
However, the model in this video is not such a person: she is Nicole Pierce, a dancer and pianist and a dear friend. We spent a year creating a (legendary?) website called Photomatters, which is a teaching website about photography. I photograhed Nicole over 6,000 times, using every creative option I could think of to create Photomatters, which is where the images for this song came from. Although I am terribly fond of Nicole I am both proud and a little sorry to say that I never allowed myself to think beyond our professional relationship.
You know I fell so deep in love,
You had me so entranced,
Problem was,
It wasn’t you with whom I did that dance.
It was a fantasy I hung on you,
A fantasy I draped upon you,
A fantasy I painted over
The painting... that was you.
So clear now but not back then,
That when I fell in love,
It wasn’t you that I was seeing,
That’s not what it was.
It was a fantasy I hung on you,
A fantasy I draped upon you,
A fantasy I painted over
The painting... that was you.
Unfair of me to put you in
A hopeless situation,
Playing a role you didn’t want
To meet my expectations.
It was a fantasy I hung on you,
A fantasy I draped upon you,
A fantasy I painted over
The…painting that was you.
And even more it’s sad to say
That in my blind obsession,
I missed out and never saw
The painting… that was you.
I missed out and never saw
The painting that was you.
