I wrote this as part of my Uncle Jon Songwagon cable TV extravaganza, the farming episode.
The birds are singing, the bees are humming,
Thank you, thank you, to Ms. Mary Cummings.
Ms. Mary thought that with Boston growing,
A park was needed for Boston kids.
She set out to preserve the land,
Selling it her will forbids.
The land had been the Cummings farm
Great big barns and cows out grazing
Mary’s vision was kids with gardens
It all came true for a while – amazing.
The birds are singing, the bees are humming,
Thank you, thank you, to Ms. Mary Cummings.
But times got tough, the city needy,
They saw money from a park to sell,
Until some people came together
And knocked those nasty plans to heck
There was Steve and Cath and Pat that started
The Friends of Mary Cummings Park
And with blood and sweat and tears and money
They preserved Ms. Mary’s ark.
The birds are singing, the bees are humming,
Thank you, thank you, to Ms. Mary Cummings.
Now the city has a made a deal
With our friend those great trustees,
Ms. Mary’s park is in good hands,
Such great news for the birds and bees.
Now kids and folks from towns and cities
Can visit here and they can share,
This lovely park with all the critters,
Forests and swamps and meadows here.
The birds are singing, the bees are humming,
Thank you, thank you, to Ms. Mary Cummings.
