Harden Your Heart

My mother said it and I never forgot it, though in truth I never really acted on it until I was an adult and was faced with difficult choices.

We were thinning out the garden my mother and me,
I was just about five years old.
I said how can we toss away these little baby carrots?
And this is what my mother to me told.

CHORUS:
Some times you have to harden your heart,
Some times you have to harden your heart,
Some times you have to harden your heart,
Some times you have to harden your heart.

You love that old car, and you've had it for years,
And you love how it looks and feels,
But it can’t be repaired you got no place to put it,
Gotta junk it and get some new wheels.

CHORUS

Your kid's got a splinter and it hurts like hell,
And you know you gotta get it out,
Hurts even more when you go in and get it.
All the while while they scream and shout.

CHORUS

The old dog is hurting, he can barely stand,
His kidneys are starting to fail,
It hurts to think about it but you know it's time,
‘Cause he no longer wags his tail.

CHORUS

When you’re in a situation where you really can’t help,
And things are pulling you down,
You really don’t want to walk away from trouble.
But you can’t stay there and drown.

CHORUS

I wonder if maybe we get too good,
At learning to harden our heart.
It's not always the answer to what we need,
And maybe it keeps us apart.

2nd CHORUS:
Some times you have to harden your heart,
But some times you have to soften your heart,
Some times you have to harden your heart,
Some times you have to soften your heart.
