Everything Rhymes

everything rhymes

How this came about:

Yes, this song came about specifically as a result of a slight reduction in my regular dosage of anti-depressant. After 25 quite productive years I decided to try a little less of it with pretty immediate and unpleasant results. But now I'm back where I need to be and things still rhyme, but not as insistently and with less stupidity.

Does it seem like a problem that a person has to take anti-depressants for a lifetime? Yes. But after many years of semi useful talk therapies I decided that I would take the stuff. Shouldn't be necessary, but in our world today, for many, it is.

I recently adjusted my dosage
And very soon I came to notice
I’m sinking into a pool of slime
Where nothing makes sense but everything rhymes.

Cars in the trees and trees are marching,
Tigers asleep but his stripes are still charging
Butter and bolts and The New York Times
Nothing makes sense but everything rhymes.

I used to know where I fit in
Where I’m going, where I’ve been
But I lost the thread and I hit hard times,
Cause nothing makes sense but everything rhymes.

Icicles hang from liberty’s ears,

The river just dissolved into tears,
Abstract painted traffic signs,
Nothing makes sense but everything rhymes.

Subway is angry the buses are glad,
Time to cheer up and also get mad,
Trading in dollars for on nickels and dimes.
Nothing makes sense but everything rhymes.

Getting out of bed once more
Wondering what’s next
Given no choices of several kinds.
Time to commit or answer for crimes.
Sign right here if you wish to resign,
And nothing makes sense but everything rhymes.
